First time at Istanbul Airport?
Six simple steps from kerbside to boarding gate — the way locals do it.
- STEP 01
Arrive 3 hours before international, 2 hours domestic
Traffic to IST can be unpredictable — leave the city centre with at least 90 minutes buffer.
- STEP 02
Find your check-in island (A–Z)
IST has a single passenger terminal. Check your airline’s island on the FIDS screens at the entrance.
- STEP 03
Drop bags & get boarding pass
Use online check-in or one of 500+ self-service kiosks. Carry-on must fit 55×40×23 cm for most airlines.
- STEP 04
Passport control & security
Have passport, boarding pass and visa ready. Liquids ≤100 ml in a clear 1L bag, laptops in a separate tray.
- STEP 05
Walk to your gate (allow 25 min for piers F/G)
IST is huge — gates A & B are closest, F & G furthest. Use moving walkways, follow yellow signage.
- STEP 06
Boarding starts 40 min before departure
Listen for announcements, have boarding pass + ID ready. Gates close 15 min before departure.
