Istanbul Airport Guide
Quick answer: Istanbul Airport (IST), operated by iGA, opened in 2018 on the European side of the city and is one of the world's largest airports under a single roof. It has one terminal with concourses A, B, D and F for international flights and G for domestic. It sits about 40 km from the centre; you reach the city by the M11 metro (changing to the M2 at Gayrettepe), HAVAİST buses or taxi. Many visitors need a Turkey e-Visa, obtained online before travel at the official evisa.gov.tr. Arrive around three hours before an international flight.
This is a quick orientation guide to Istanbul Airport: what it is, how to get to and from the city, visa basics, the terminal layout, and the main services. Each topic links to a fuller guide where you need more detail.

What is Istanbul Airport (IST)?
Istanbul Airport is the city's main international hub, run by iGA and opened on 29 October 2018 on the European side, in the Arnavutköy district. It is one of the largest airports in the world under a single roof and the home base of Turkish Airlines. It currently handles around 90 million passengers a year, with a long-term master plan to grow toward 200 million. Note that it is a single terminal: what you see signposted as A, B, D, F and G are concourses inside one building, not separate terminals.
How do you get from Istanbul Airport to the city?
You have three main options, and the right one depends on your budget, luggage and destination:
- M11 metro is the cheapest and traffic-proof. It runs from the airport to Gayrettepe in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, where you change to the M2 line for the centre. It is paid with an Istanbulkart, and runs from about 06:00 until around midnight.
- HAVAİST buses run from the Transportation level to Taksim, Beşiktaş and other districts, useful when the metro does not reach your area directly. Most routes run around the clock.
- Taxi is the most direct, door to door. Istanbul taxis are metered, and you also pay motorway and bridge tolls, so the fare varies with traffic.
Fares change often, so we keep current prices, times and the best pick for each district in our Istanbul Airport transport guide. If you are driving yourself, see the parking guide.
Do you need a visa for Turkey?
It depends on your nationality. Many travellers need a Turkey e-Visa, which you apply for online before you travel at the official portal, evisa.gov.tr. Some nationalities can enter with a passport only, some are visa-exempt, and others need to also hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit to qualify. Because the rules, fees and allowed stay differ by country, check your own nationality's conditions on evisa.gov.tr before booking. Use only that official site: many lookalike "e-visa" websites are third-party services that charge extra.
How is the terminal laid out?
Everything is under one roof. Departures are on the upper level (check-in, security, then the central airside hub and the gates), and arrivals are below (passport control and baggage reclaim). International flights use concourses A, B, D and F; domestic flights use concourse G. The building is large, so allow time to reach far gates on foot. For the full breakdown, see our terminal and concourse guide.
What services are at the airport?
As one of the world's biggest airports, IST has the full range of services, most of them in the central airside area where the concourses meet:
- Airport lounges, including the Skytrax-rated iGA Lounge open to Priority Pass and walk-in guests.
- A huge duty-free area run by Unifree, plus extensive dining and shopping.
- Car parks (covered and open-air) with valet and EV charging.
- Free Wi-Fi, airport hotels (YOTELAIR airside and YOTEL landside), prayer rooms, pharmacies and children's areas.
How early should you arrive?
Plan to arrive about three hours before an international flight and two hours before a domestic one. Because the terminal is so large and the walk to the farthest gates can take 20 to 30 minutes, do not cut it fine, especially at busy morning and evening peaks. Connecting passengers stay airside and follow the Transfer signs to dedicated transfer security.
