Once you leave the jet bridge, follow the signs for Arrivals and Baggage Claim. The walk to passport control commonly takes 15 to 25 minutes, and there is no internal train, so moving walkways are your only shortcut. How does passport control work?

Cards are widely accepted in Istanbul, so you do not need to land with lira. Bank ATMs in the arrivals hall usually beat the airport exchange counters on rate; withdraw Turkish lira and, if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline that option and choose TRY.

Luggage storage

How do you get from the airport to the city?

You have three main options, all reachable from the arrivals level. The M11 metro runs from the station below the terminal towards the city, Havaist coaches serve major districts from the bus level, and official metered taxis wait at the marked ranks outside. What if you are connecting in Istanbul?

If IST is only a stopover, ignore the Arrivals signs and follow Transfer instead. What happens next depends on your route.

International to international

You stay airside the whole time: no passport control, no baggage claim. Follow the Transfer signs to the security re-screening point, pass the checkpoint and continue to your next gate. On a single ticket your bag is normally tagged through to the final destination; check the tag at your first check-in so you know for sure. Turkish Airlines plans connections of roughly 60-75 minutes here, and that is realistic if your first flight is on time, though two hours is far more relaxed given gate-to-gate walks of up to 25 minutes.

International to domestic

Connecting to a domestic Turkish flight adds steps: you clear passport control, and your onward gate is in concourse G. On one through ticket your bag usually transfers automatically, but on separate bookings you must collect it, exit and check in again for the domestic leg. Allow at least two hours, and closer to three if your flights are on separate tickets or different airlines.
