Turkish Airlines Baggage Allowance (2026): Cabin, Checked and Excess Fees

anastasia_maisuradzeUpdated· Published6 min read

Turkish Airlines allows every Economy passenger one cabin bag of 55 x 40 x 23 cm up to 8 kg plus a personal item of 40 x 30 x 15 cm up to 4 kg. Your checked allowance depends on the route: on piece-concept routes (the Americas and some others) Economy typically gets bags of up to 23 kg each and Business up to 32 kg, while on weight-concept routes the allowance is a total number of kilograms shown on your ticket. On Turkish domestic flights it is always weight-based: 15 kg with EcoFly, 20 kg with ExtraFly, 25 kg with PrimeFly. No single bag may exceed 32 kg or 158 cm in combined dimensions. The exact figure for your booking is on your ticket and in the official Turkish Airlines baggage calculator; rules on this page were checked against turkishairlines.com in July 2026.

How much cabin baggage does Turkish Airlines allow?

In Economy you may bring one cabin bag of up to 8 kg measuring no more than 55 x 40 x 23 cm, plus one personal item such as a laptop bag or handbag of up to 4 kg within 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Business class doubles the cabin bags: two pieces of 8 kg each (16 kg in total) plus the same personal item. An infant traveling on your lap is entitled to their own 8 kg cabin bag in either class, and a garment bag up to 114 x 60 x 11 cm counts as your cabin bag, not as an extra.

The limits are enforced. At the boarding gate, untagged bags that break the size or weight rules are charged and sent to the hold, so have your bag tagged at check-in if it is borderline. On full flights the crew may also ask you to check your compliant cabin bag for free to speed up boarding. Keep passports, medicines and valuables in the personal item either way.

How much checked baggage do you get?

Turkish Airlines runs two systems, and your route decides which applies. On piece-concept routes, which include flights to and from the Americas, your ticket lists a number of bags: each Economy bag may weigh up to 23 kg and each Business bag up to 32 kg. On weight-concept routes, your ticket lists a total weight in kilograms and you may split it across several bags. The concept and the exact figure are printed on your ticket and shown in the airline’s baggage calculator, and they shift with the fare package (EcoFly, ExtraFly, PrimeFly, BusinessFly) you picked at booking. The cheapest EcoFly fares on some international routes include no checked bag at all, so check before you pack rather than at the counter.

Domestic flights inside Türkiye never use the piece concept. The weight allowance follows the fare package: 15 kg on EcoFly, 20 kg on ExtraFly and 25 kg on PrimeFly. Two hard limits apply everywhere: no single bag over 32 kg (heavier loads must be split into two or more bags) and no bag over 158 cm in combined width, height and depth within the free allowance. Star Alliance Gold members get one extra bag on piece routes or +20 kg on weight routes.

What does excess baggage cost?

Excess fees are route-specific, so there is no single price list: the charge depends on the zone you fly in, whether your route uses pieces or kilograms, and your fare package. Two figures are fixed, though. A bag measuring between 158 and 292 cm pays an oversize fee of $90 on international flights or 1,000 TRY on domestic ones, in Economy and Business alike, even when the bag is within your free weight allowance. And nothing above 292 cm or 32 kg flies as baggage at all.

Buying extra kilos or pieces online before you reach the airport is consistently cheaper than paying at the counter, and Turkish Airlines notes that extra baggage prices can change up to 8 hours before departure. For the exact quote on your booking, use the baggage calculator on turkishairlines.com or the mobile app. Comparing airlines at IST? What about infants, strollers and special items?

Passengers with an infant may check a stroller not exceeding 115 cm on top of the infant’s own 8 kg cabin bag. The infant’s checked allowance mirrors the route system: one 23 kg bag on piece routes, 10 kg on weight routes, and nothing on EcoFly fares that carry no free baggage. Sports and music equipment travels under a separate service with its own fees, so declare it when booking rather than at the airport.

Liquids in checked bags (other than plain water) are capped at 5 liters per passenger, packed leak-proof in containers of at most 1 liter each. Cabin liquids follow the usual security rule: containers up to 100 ml inside one transparent 1-liter bag; larger containers go in the hold even if half empty. Full details are in our guide to the liquid rules at Istanbul Airport.

Where do you check in and drop bags at Istanbul Airport?

Istanbul Airport is Turkish Airlines’ home hub, and the check-in and bag-drop rows sit in the main departures hall on the top floor. Landing early or heading out late? IST also offers paid luggage storage on the arrivals level. And if you want to shed your suitcases before you even reach the airport, Turkish Airlines runs an early check-in and bag-drop point in the city that lets you tour Istanbul luggage-free on departure day.

FAQ

Is the 8 kg cabin limit really enforced?
Yes. Untagged, non-compliant bags caught at the gate are charged and sent to the hold. If your bag is close to the limit, have it weighed and tagged at check-in.

Can two passengers combine their checked allowances?
Only if they are on the same booking. Passengers traveling on different reservation (PNR) numbers cannot pool their allowances on international flights.

What happens if my bag weighs more than 32 kg?
It will not be accepted as checked baggage. The 32 kg cap is absolute in both systems; you must split the load into two or more bags.

How do I know whether my route uses pieces or kilograms?
Check your ticket or the official baggage calculator. Flights to and from the Americas use the piece concept; Turkish domestic flights always use kilograms; other routes vary by destination.

Does Star Alliance Gold status add baggage?
Yes: one extra bag on piece-concept routes or an extra 20 kg on weight-concept routes, on top of the ticket allowance.
