Istanbul Airport tax refund

Istanbul International AirportUpdated· Published4 min read

Quick answer: Visitors who live outside Turkey can reclaim part of the 20 percent VAT on eligible shopping, as long as you spend at least 1,000 TL on one receipt at a participating store. You ask for a tax-free form when you pay, then get it validated by customs at Istanbul Airport before you leave the country, and you receive roughly 10 to 12 percent of the price back after the operator's fee. The key step travellers forget is the customs stamp at the airport: without it, there is no refund.

Who can claim, and the minimum spend

The VAT refund is for non-residents taking the goods home. You must spend at least 1,000 TL on a single receipt at a shop that runs a tax-free scheme (look for a Global Blue or Tax Free Point sticker). Small purchases split across receipts or days do not add up to the threshold. Bring your passport when you buy, as the shop needs it to issue the form.

VAT rates and what qualifies

Turkey's standard VAT is 20 percent (a reduced 10 percent applies to some goods such as textiles, clothing, shoes, bags and carpets). Electronics, cosmetics, glassware and similar carry the 20 percent rate. Alcohol, tobacco, food you consume in Turkey and local services are not refundable.

Where to validateCustoms at Istanbul Airport, before departure

Step 1: at the shop

Tell the cashier you want tax-free shopping and show your passport. They issue a tax-free form (paper or digital) linked to your purchase. Keep the form and the receipt together until you leave Turkey, and keep the goods accessible for inspection.

Step 2: get the customs stamp at Istanbul Airport

This is the step that pays you. Your form must be validated by customs (Gümrük) at the airport before you fly, and where you do it depends on where the goods are:

  • Goods in checked luggage: go to the customs desk in the check-in area before you drop your bags, so the officer can see the items.
  • Goods in your hand luggage: clear passport control first, then find the airside customs point to show the goods and get the stamp.

Follow the "Tax Free" and "Gümrük / Customs" signs, and allow extra time, as queues build at peak hours. A missing stamp means the refund is refused.

Step 3: get your money

With the validated form, collect your refund at the operator's airport desk (Global Blue or Tax Free Point) in cash, or have it paid back to your card. Card refunds can take a few weeks to appear. After the operator's handling fee, expect roughly 10 to 12 percent of the purchase price back, which is why the refund is most worthwhile on larger buys.
