Touristanbul: Turkish Airlines Free Istanbul Layover Tour

anastasia_maisuradzePublished5 min read

Touristanbul is a free guided city tour that Turkish Airlines gives its international transfer passengers during a layover of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport. It covers the round-trip shuttle, an English-speaking guide, museum entries and a meal, all at no charge. Sign up online with your booking code or at the Touristanbul desk in Arrivals, and a coach takes you into the historic city and back with time to spare before your connecting flight.

Who qualifies for the free Touristanbul tour?

The tour is open to passengers connecting through Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, not to people on separate tickets or other airlines. To join, you generally need to meet all of these conditions:

  • Your layover at Istanbul Airport (IST) is between 6 and 24 hours.
  • Both flights are on the same booking (PNR) and on a Turkish Airlines ticket (the ticket number starts with 235).
  • Your inbound and onward flights are international connections.
  • There is at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of the tour and your next departure, so you are never rushed back to the gate.

You also need to be able to clear passport control and enter Türkiye, since the tour leaves the airport (see the visa note below).

What is included, and what does it cost?

Touristanbul is genuinely free. There is no fee to join and nothing to buy on the day. Each tour includes:

  • Return transport by coach between Istanbul Airport and the tour route.
  • A professional guide who leads the group in English.
  • Entry fees to the museums and sites on the itinerary.
  • A meal, usually breakfast and/or lunch depending on the tour length.

Personal extras such as souvenirs or your own snacks and drinks outside the included meal are the only out-of-pocket costs.

Touristanbul tour times and routes

Turkish Airlines runs several different routes each day, so there is usually an option that fits your connection. They range from a short morning sightseeing loop to a full-day tour of the historic peninsula, each departing from and returning to Istanbul Airport. The sample schedule below shows the spread of start and finish times; exact routes and times can change, so confirm the current list when you register.

The routes generally take in the landmarks of Sultanahmet, the old city, such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome, with longer tours adding stops like the Grand Bazaar or a Bosphorus viewpoint. The guide sets the pace so the group is back at the airport on time.

How to register and board

There are two ways to sign up. You can register online in advance by entering your booking code (PNR) or ticket number and surname, which shows the tours you are eligible for. Or you can simply register in person after you land, at the Touristanbul desk on the Arrivals level (also signposted near the hotel and transfer desks). No prior booking is strictly required to join.

Plan your timing carefully. Allow roughly 45 minutes to reach the Touristanbul desk after landing, since that includes passport control. Check in at the desk at least 30 minutes before your chosen tour departs. Tours can fill up, so registering online or heading to the desk early improves your chance of a place.

Do you need a visa for Touristanbul?

Yes, in effect. Because the tour leaves the airport, you pass through passport control and formally enter Türkiye, so you must be eligible to do so. Many nationalities can enter visa-free for short stays, and others need an e-visa, which is quick to obtain online before you travel. Check your own nationality's rules in advance, because passengers who cannot clear passport control can enjoy the airport itself but cannot take the city tour.

Practical tips for a smooth tour

  • Travel light on the day. You move with the group, so a small daypack is easier than wheeling cabin bags around the sites; left-luggage and lockers are available at the airport if you need them.
  • Keep your boarding pass and passport handy for re-entry and security when you return.
  • If your preferred tour is full, ask the desk about the next departure that still fits your connection.
  • Build in buffer. The 1 hour 25 minute rule is a minimum, and Istanbul traffic can be heavy, so a little extra margin keeps the day stress-free.

Is the Touristanbul tour really free?
Yes. Turkish Airlines covers the coach transfer, the English-speaking guide, museum entry fees and a meal. You only pay for personal extras such as souvenirs or drinks outside the included meal.

What layover length do I need for Touristanbul?
Your connection at Istanbul Airport must be between 6 and 24 hours, and there must be at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of the tour and your next flight. Shorter tours suit a 6 to 7 hour layover, while the full-day route needs a 12 hour or longer connection.

Can I join if I am flying a different airline?
No. Both flights must be on the same Turkish Airlines booking, with a ticket number starting 235. Passengers on separate tickets or other carriers are not eligible, though they can still arrange their own city visit if they have a long enough layover and the right visa.

Do I have to book Touristanbul in advance?
No, you can register at the Touristanbul desk in Arrivals after you land. Registering online beforehand is still useful, because it confirms which tours fit your connection and tours can sell out on busy days.

If your layover is shorter or you would rather stay airside, see our guide to making the most of a layover at Istanbul Airport, the airport lounges, and the Türkiye visa and transit rules before you plan your day.
