How does security work at Istanbul Airport?
Unlike many European hubs, IST screens you at the door. Every person and every bag passes an X-ray at the terminal entrance, before the check-in halls. It moves quickly, but on busy mornings a queue can form outside, so it counts toward your time budget. The main security checkpoint follows after check-in and passport control on international departures, and this is where the liquid bag and electronics come out of your carry-on.

What are the liquid rules at IST?
The standard 100 ml rule applies, and at Istanbul Airport it covers domestic flights as well as international ones. Every liquid, gel or aerosol in your carry-on (water, drinks, perfume, lotions, toothpaste, shaving foam, sprays) must be in a container of 100 ml or less, and all containers must fit in a single transparent resealable bag of about 1 liter, one bag per passenger. What is banned from carry-on at IST?
Sharp objects lead the list: knives, box cutters, razors and any scissors with blades longer than 6 cm belong in checked baggage only. If you travel with hand luggage alone, you simply cannot bring them. Tools, bats and anything usable as a weapon follow the same logic. Flammables (fuels, solvents, camping gas) are banned from both cabin and checked bags.
Two rules run the other way around, and they surprise people. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must travel in the cabin, never in the hold, with terminals protected against short circuits. And one lighter is permitted in cabin baggage on Turkish Airlines flights, while lighters in checked bags are not allowed. Traveling with medication or a baby?
Liquid medicines and baby food are the two big exceptions to the 100 ml rule: you may carry what you need for the flight, beyond the limit, if you declare it at screening.
