Overnight Layover at Istanbul Airport: Free Hotel, Sleep Pods and More
On an overnight layover at Istanbul Airport you have three realistic choices: claim a free hotel through the Turkish Airlines Stopover programme if your connection is 20 hours or longer, sleep airside in a YOTELAIR cabin or an IGA sleep pod, or take a paid hotel in the city. Which one fits depends on how long you have, whether you fly Turkish Airlines, and your budget. Here is how each works so you can decide before you land.
Can you get a free hotel on a long Istanbul layover?
Often, yes. Turkish Airlines runs a Stopover programme that gives transit passengers a complimentary hotel night in Istanbul. The basics:
- Your trip runs from one international point to another through Istanbul, with a layover of 20 hours up to 7 days.
- Economy passengers get 1 night in a 4-star hotel; Business passengers get 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel.
- Travellers whose journey starts in certain countries, including the USA, mainland China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, get an extra night.
- The flights must be a Turkish Airlines round trip on the same ticket (number starting 235), and you can use the benefit once per journey.
Apply at least 72 hours before the flight you want the hotel for, through the Stopover page after you have booked. This is separate from the free Touristanbul city tour, and on a long enough stay you can sometimes combine the two.
Sleeping inside the airport
If you would rather not leave, or your layover is too short for the free hotel, Istanbul Airport is open around the clock and has several ways to rest. Prices move, so treat the figures as a guide and check on the day.
| Option | Where | Approx. price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| YOTELAIR cabin (airside) | After security, no passport control needed | ~$250 to $350 / night | A real bed and shower without re-entering Türkiye |
| YOTELAIR cabin (landside) | In the public terminal, before security | ~$200 to $305 / night | Arrivals or a late check-in before an early flight |
| IGA Sleepods | Airside near the D gates | ~€15/hr day, ~€22/hr overnight | A few hours of private sleep, pay by the hour |
| Lounges and nap zones | Several spots around the terminal | Free seating; lounge entry varies | Resting on a budget when cabins are full |

Going to a hotel in the city
If you are not eligible for the free Stopover hotel but still want a proper bed, a paid city hotel is an option when your layover is long enough to make the trip worthwhile. Remember that leaving the airport means clearing passport control, so you must be able to enter Türkiye on your passport or an e-visa. The old city is about 75 to 90 minutes away by metro or coach. For the routes, costs and what you can see, follow our guide to a long Istanbul layover in the city, and check Türkiye visa and transit rules first.
Which option fits your layover?
- 20 hours or more and flying Turkish Airlines: apply for the free Stopover hotel, the best value by far.
- Long layover, not on Turkish Airlines, want a bed: book a YOTELAIR cabin airside, or a city hotel if you have a visa and time.
- A few hours overnight: an IGA sleep pod or a lounge keeps you rested without committing to a full night.
- On a tight budget: the free nap zones and 24-hour seating areas do the job.
Is the free Turkish Airlines hotel the same as the free city tour?
No. The Stopover programme gives a free hotel night for layovers of 20 hours or more, while Touristanbul is a free guided city tour for layovers of 6 to 24 hours. They are separate benefits, and a long stay can sometimes qualify for both.
How long does my layover need to be for the free hotel?
At least 20 hours, and up to 7 days, on an international round trip through Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. Apply at least 72 hours before the relevant flight.
Can I sleep at Istanbul Airport without leaving?
Yes. The airport is open 24 hours, with YOTELAIR cabins and IGA sleep pods airside, plus free nap zones and seating. You do not need a visa to rest airside, only to leave the terminal.
How much are the sleep pods at Istanbul Airport?
IGA Sleepods cost roughly €15 per hour during the day and about €22 per hour overnight. A YOTELAIR cabin runs around $250 to $350 a night airside. Prices change, so confirm current rates when you book.
